Knitting Socks......... and Schtuff Like That.....

So as I had said in my last post I FinaLLy knitted my first pair of socks. This has started me on the path to Crazy Town. Crazy-fingering weight- sock making- sock obsessed-town. Or maybe its just an ExceLLent excuse to buy amazing hand dyed yarns .... either way I have to say its been a week long whirlwind adventure.

(<---- this yarn is called Stellar dyed by The Cyborg's Craft Room)

I want to make every one I know socks..... and its Christmas. Did I mention this is my FIRST pair? And again...... Christmas is coming? *****sigh***** why why why do I do this to me?

I decided at the very least I needed to make hubby some socks. I had this plan see..... and well, you know what they say about the best laid plans..... naw I dont either but lets just say it seems as if it never ends very well.

I had a friend over at the shop Knit Mona dye up some merino/nylon fingering weight sock yarn in hubs New York Rangers colors and away I went..... On Addi Sock Rockets Size US 0 needles in a 3x1 rib pattern..... toe up...... magic loop...... *breathe*

I turned on some knitting podcasts and for the first couple of days it was really quite relaxing ..... the sneaking around knitting while hubs was at work was kind of fun...... WAS.

So Im on day I have no idea now :)))))) And well I think the novelty of either the socks or the season is wearing thin. Or maybe its just me. Maybe Im wearing thin.

Im gonna press on..... I love him so much..... and he will be so happy and excited to get these.

And they are turning out kinda cool.....

I was going to do an after thought heel and then well, after some thought I decided against it. I dont think Im quite up for the challenge or quite frankly the risk.... If you dont know what an after thought heel is its basically where you knit the whole sock.... minus the heel..... and when you are done you CUT your knitting ******shrieks and gasps in horror**** and put your heel in. After thoughtly.

Instead I decided on the Fish Lips Kiss Heel (say that seven times fast) and well..... I had already knit the WHOLE first sock (figuring on an after thought heel..... ) so Im going to have to rip back. Yup. Frog it. many many inches *sigh* and reknit it with tooth pick needles.

I hope he digs these socks. He better dig these socks. He best sqweeeeeeee like an 8 year old girl who just got a real unicorn from Santa. Like no I mean it..... from the actual chubby, red coated, awesomely bearded, Mr. Claus. :)))))

Merry Handmade Holidayz my friends ..... <3

Retro Snow Day Mittens

In our group over on Facebook (click here and join the fun!) we were taking about making mittens, both crochet and knit…. oh my its that time of the year isnt it? Here in northern Minnesota we already have several inches on the ground and I felt kind of caught off guard….. honestly when I went through my hats and mittens box I was shocked to see I had a zillion of everything else BUT matching mittens. I live in the middle of nowhere …. and I am soooooo not kidding. Although nowhere has its advantages one thing it doesnt have is a plethora of stores to jump out and buy a zillion
kidlets winter gear.

So whats a crafty mama in the woods to do? Why make mittens of course BUT as I soon discovered I really didnt dig any of the mitt patterns I was finding for crochet….. I started knitting. Knitting takes a really long time. Did I mention I have SEVEN kids? :P Knitting prolly wasnt going to get every ones hands warm any time soon. Still I forged on…. 4 needles, stitch markers, thumb gussets….. sigh…..

Until in the group during this same time we began taking about mittens and overwhelmingly people seemed to loath crocheting them. I have to agree. Im not hip on the look of a worsted weight mitt crochet in the round although I do dig a fingering weight mitt thats crochet with a design or pattern….. but whose got time for all that when you just want some toasty mittens for your wee one and you NEED em like, yesterday?

I had suggested a mitt pattern to a lady in the group that was easy (found here), crochet and worked up fast. ****there are many of this style pattern out there, worked all in one flat piece and seamed****  I was still plodding away on my knitted mitts until nostalgia took over. As we were taking I remembered hot coco breaks during a cold day of snow fort building or after some tiring walks dragging my sled up the huge hill in the hay field…. on my hands were mittens my mother had made me….. they were crocheted because although she knew how to knit she hated doing it…. loved the look, hated the time it took so she opted to crochet instead. The mitts I remembered were wonderful and similar to the pattern I had suggested for the woman in the group….. I had to make a pattern of my own. I remember my mothers looking somewhat the same but with a more gusseted thumb. Could I recreate my favorite pair? ****they were blue, like Minion blue, and wore them under her hand sewn ‘woolie bear’ mitts (this will be another thing I recreate from my mamas wonderful handmade goodness, oh I do have such wonderful memories of her handicrafts)*****

I think I did it……. Im calling them Retro Snow Day Mittens….. because they just bring me right on back. For now I only have the 2-5 year old size completed but am diligently working on the numbers for the rest as I go up the sizes of my kidlets…… I really hope my kids have fond memories of wonderful snow days in their future <3
*******Writing up the pattern and making a video for these …. total love <3 ******** STAY TUNED ;)

The Unforgettable Hat ~FREE PATTERN~

I really adore Knit Picks Chroma Yarns and have been searching for something similar that might be purchased in stores and more accessible (and more cost efficient) for all yarn lovers on every budget. The other day I ws doing my weekly shopping at our local Walmart (by local I mean 50 miles away, one way :))))) ahhhhhh life in the big woods of northern Minnesota :P ) and although I rarely buy my yarns there, I always take a peek. Wow am I ever glad I did! I found Red Hearts Unforgettable Yarn and its darn tootin near my Chroma! For considerably less money and its acrylic for easier care. If your local Walmart doesnt carry it remember you can go to the website and order it and have it shipped to home for free with orders over $50 or pay for it in your online cart and free pick up at your local store ;)
I didnt know what I was going to make with it but I bought 3 skeins ….. and after looking at it and drooling over the colorways for a couple of days, this hat was born! I call it The Unforgettable Hat (obviously for the yarn name but ooooohhhhh the colors are definitely unforgettable!) This hat can be a beanie style, short slouch or full slouch. Beginner Desert Sky Beaded Scarf ~FREE PATTERN~

I love yarn….. I love the look, the smell, the colors, the uses the…. well everything! I have a special soft spot for luxury yarns and hand dyed? Dont get me started. This yarn I picked up with nothing special in mind but I put it away in my stash to wait for it to tell me what it wanted to grow up to be. After 5 months of not uttering a
word it finally spoke. Scarf it said. Easy and beaded.
This is 370 yards of Three Irish Girls Yarn in a sock weight cashmere blend in the Supernova color way. Its no secret TIG Yarns are my all time favorite. And before you say anything I know it can be a lil pricey but hear me out for just a second. There is nothing like the drape of natural fibers, and this scarf is going to be worn against the skin as a decorative accent and most likely for long periods of time. I figure it this way…… comfort, drape and all the time spent with the beaded accents…… its well worth the end result. I would love to encourage those who havent tried a skein of lux yarn to give it a go. See what you think….. and then decide.
On to the pattern. Its really easy for sure :) I thought since the yarn had a lot of color changes I would go with a very basic pattern and stitch. I chose a granny triangle as my base shawl pattern and it worked out really well for the technique I was wanting to use as far as getting in some beginner beading on the edge that gives it the lil bit of pop! Lets gather our goodies and dive in :)
Materials:
330 yards Three Irish Girls sock weight cashmerino yarn in the Supernova colorway
G hook
6mm oval stone beads
Needle for weaving in ends
Scissors
Fishing line or bead needle for stringing your beads
Pliers *you may need them to pull the fishline depending on the size hole in your bead*
Lets get stitchin’ :) But before we get started…….. There are a couple of ways you can add your beads in this project. I used the end/fishline method since my beads were only on the last row. In this method you crochet your piece all the way to the end and then PULL OUT your last row where your beads are going to go (this way you only have to string beads on your last bit of yarn and not carry them through the entire project) and this method is the one I will be showing here. Your could choose to string them at the beginning and carry them down your yarn until you needed them at the end but its kind of in the way, for me at least. Another method you might use would be IF your beads had a large enough hole that you could use a very small crochet hook to go through it and pull up the yarn at each place you wanted a bead. This is a great method, but I rarely use beads that are have a large enough hole for even the tiniest of hooks. This brings me to the final method I chose….. end/fishline.
Stitch explanation:
Shell= 3 double crochet in same space
Center Shell= 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet in the same space
Scarf Pattern:
Chain 4. Join to form a ring.
Row 1: Chain 3 (this is you first double crochet always) 3 double crochet, chain 2, 4 double crochet in ring
Row 2: Chain 3, 3 double crochet in between the chain 3 and 1st dc of the row below. Chain 1. Work Center Shell in the chain 2 space. Chain 1. Work 3 dc in between the 3 and 4th dc of the previous row, 1 dc in the top of last stitch.
Row 3: Chain 3, 3 double crochet in between the chain 3 and 1st dc of the row below. Chain 1. Work Shell in chain 1 space. Work Center Shell in chain 2 space. Chain 1. Work Shell in chain 1 space. Chain 1. Work 3 dc in between the 3 and 4th dc of the previous row, 1 dc in the top of last stitch.
Row 4: Continue with row 3 working Shell in each chain 1 space and Center Shell in the Center Shell chain 2 space until you have reached desired length…… you can choose to weave in the ends and have a finished project now if you choose or you can go ahead and follow the next steps to do the beaded edge.
Beaded Edge portion…… if you decided to go ahead and bead the row you have just completed measure out about 3 extra feet of yarn and cut your end. If like me you went to the end of your yardage skip this step and go to the next.
Cut a 10 inch length of fishing line or I used Wild Fire beading thread. Bend the tread/line in half and put your yarn through like the eye of a needle. You will now use your thread ends to go through the bead hole drawing your yarn up and through it too. You should have your bead pulled down and threaded onto your yarn and it should be able to slide up and down. The number of beads you are going to need depends on how large or small your project is. Look at your final row and count ALL of your CHAIN 1 spaces. These are the spots you will have a bead in. I always add 5 more beads to my yarn line right away just in case for some reason I miss counted. So if you have 40 ch 1 spaces in you last row, string on 45 beads just for good measure. You can easily slide them off at the end.
I know this will make some of you cringe but…… rip out your last row. I know right? Gahhhhhhhh! But just try to trust the process ;) Begin again at the start of the row that you just ripped out and continue in pattern you til you reach the first Chain 1. Slide your first bead up against your hook and chain 1. The bead will now be locked into that stitch. Continue with the pattern to next chain 1 and repeat by sliding the next bead down and chaining 1. Do this in every chain 1 all the way across your final row. Fasten off and weave in ends as normal to secure when finished.
You now have a really beautiful shawl or accent scarf….. <3 Hope you enjoy and if ya like please stop by Strings and Things on Facebook and share a picture of your pretty :)

Lilly Gurls Easy Peasy Shrug ~FREE PATTERN~

I had been really preoccupied this week with a project and hadn’t taken the time to make Lilly a
Friday dress….

Whats a Friday dress you might ask? Well as the mom of seven kidlets I kinda feel like I don’t get to spend the alone time I should with each one. Or as often as Id like. One of the ways I try to combat the problem is by making weekly or every day chores or outings that are necessary seem like special events. Fridays are Miss Lilly Gurls day.
Being the littlest she seems to always get the short end of the stick when it comes to special time. Oh sure she has all of us wrapped around her cute lil finger and she is never alone, but sometimes that’s the problem. All kinds of attention but little of it really concentrates on her.
So since I go out on Fridays to do the shopping and she and I are together I decided to make it our special thing. Sure were only going to regular old stores and eggs and milk might not be all that exciting but…….. we get dressed allllll up to do it. I make her a new dress every Friday and at the store that day we pick out fabric she likes for her next weeks adventure. She gets to feel extra special all dressed up and I love to see her smile. :)
